Shelves and household fittings
Prepare a Pakenham enquiry for shelves, curtain brackets and light household fittings. Explain wall types, loads and access before a provider assesses the job.
A shelf, curtain rail or coat hook needs a fixing suitable for both the wall and the load. Guessing from the appearance of the surface can leave a fitting insecure or damage concealed services. Pakenham Handyman is a referral enquiry site operated by Yes Right Pty Ltd. Independent providers assess whether a proposed fitting belongs within their skills and scope before agreeing to do it.
Tell the provider what the fitting must carry
- Give the product details and intended use.
- A decorative shelf holding a small ornament differs from a shelf filled with books.
- State the dimensions, estimated load and whether brackets or fixings are supplied.
- Include the manufacturer’s instructions where available.
- Supplied wall plugs may not suit every substrate, so the final fixing method requires an assessment.
For curtain brackets, describe the window width, curtain weight and whether existing holes can be reused. Mention damaged plaster around old brackets. Replacing a fitting in the same position does not prove the underlying material is sound. If the fitting has previously fallen, explain that history before another attempt is made.
Check permission and placement
Mark the preferred location lightly and check clearances around doors, cupboards and windows. Decide on the intended height before the visit, while recognising that safe fixing positions may require adjustment. In a rental, obtain permission for drilling and agree what happens at the end of the tenancy. Apartment common property or shared walls may involve additional approvals.
Concealed cables and pipes are an important reason to avoid casual drilling. Tell the provider what is on the other side of the wall and whether plans or previous renovation information exist. The presence of a stud does not by itself settle every safety question. A provider should decline work where the fixing location cannot be assessed confidently.
Keep specialist items separate
This category excludes electrical fittings, plumbing fixtures, structural supports, safety-critical grab rails, heavy overhead loads and installations requiring work at height. Television mounts and large mirrors also need their weight, substrate and manufacturer requirements checked separately rather than being assumed to be simple shelf jobs. Do not include connecting a light or moving a pipe in a handyman enquiry.
Read the furniture assembly guide if the item includes an anti-tip restraint, and send an enquiry with the proposed fitting list. Confirm materials, cleanup, access and pricing directly with the independent provider. No appointment or acceptance of the work is guaranteed by this website.
